Tropical Green Smoothie

Mmmmm. Spinach for breakfast.

Doesn't that sound amazing?

Even though I'm vegan, the thought of salad for breakfast sounds horrible. I've got a serious love of sweet breakfasts.

But, when the taste of spinach is overpowered by sweet, fruity flavors, then I'm all in!

Check out this simple recipe that is sweet and satisfying and allows you get to get your veggies in first thing in the morning!

Tropical Green Smoothie
(Serves 1)

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups spinach (or kale)
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 1/2 cup pinapple
  • 1 stalk celery
  • 3/4 cup almond milk (or 3/4 cup water + 1 teaspoon almond butter)
Directions:
  1. Place all of the ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth!

Homemade Vegan Protein Powder Review!

I was just starting to get into protein powders when I decided to go vegan. My husband Brett would always have some protein powder mixed with water after an intense workout so I figured I'd join in. But when I stopped eating dairy, I realized that all the protein powders we had, and most on the market, had dairy in them. So, just as I stopped eating animal products cold turkey, I stopped having protein powders. I hoped that eventually after some research I'd be able to find a protein powder that was dairy free and tasted good.

With all the traveling I've been doing this past year, it was hard to find time to research and test out different protein powders. So far I've only tried out two kinds: Arbonne and Trader Joe's Hemp Protein. One of my friends heard I had gone vegan and sent me two packets of Arbonne Essentials Protein Powder Shake, one chocolate and one vanilla. Other than the price, I love this protein powder! It tastes great and I love the list of ingredients. You can read up on my full review here

The first time I tried TJ's Hemp Protein was in some plain oatmeal. Dirt. That was my initial thought on the taste. It's not very sweet and there isn't a ton of protein per serving compared to other powders. I found I could enjoy it in smoothies, but on its own it's not my favorite.

So, I still hadn't found a protein powder that fit into my budget and that tasted good.

The search continued.

Last week, however, my friends who actually played a big role in my going vegan shared with me a homemade vegan protein powder recipe that they had found on The Daily Garnish. They gave me a batch of some they had already made so that I could try it out before I bought the ingredients to make it myself.

The ingredient list is awesome.
  • hemp protein powder
  • PB2 powder
  • ground flax
  • maca powder
  • chlorella powder
  • spirulina
  • cinnamon
  • stevia
So many of these ingredients like the maca powder, chlorella and spirulina have been on my list of things to purchase and try, but I hadn't gotten around to it yet. So that's a win.

The smell is similar to algae due to the spirulina, but I chose to not let that phase me.

The first time I tried it was with frozen banana chunks, strawberries, blueberries, almond milk and kale. I wasn't sold on the taste after the first sip, but the more I kept drinking it, I grew to like it more and more. I has a subtle seaweed taste but the taste of peanut butter has a stronger presence which I really like.

Even better are the stats and price it cost to make this powder:

In 1/4 serving with 104 calories there are:
  • 4 grams of fat
  • 9 grams of carbs
  • 7 grams of fiber
  • 11 grams of protein
The cost to make this protein powder at home is only $0.53 per serving! Now that's a steal.

The full recipe for this homemade vegan protein powder can be found at The Daily Garnish. Try it out for yourself and let me know what you think!

I'd also love to hear of any other vegan protein powders that you know of and love!

Who Am I?! (Plus a Mocha Protein Smoothie Recipe)

Before I get to the deliciousness that is in that mason jar I have to talk about something.

Last night I wanted to do a spin class.

WANTED. Even after running five miles already in the morning. Who am I??

I hate spinning. It is my least favorite form of exercise (at least until after it's over when I love how I feel). I am so bad at it and the entire 45 minutes is agony. It takes a lot to get me sweating, but after five minutes in a spin class I am sweating from my shins, forearms, nose...it's painful.

But for some reason I felt the need to get out some more energy after dinner so I went to the last class of the night at our gym which was spin. I didn't hate it either! We'll see if I go to another class anytime soon though. Don't get your hopes up.

Like I mentioned, I went for a five mile run yesterday morning. I would love to run a marathon this year, but I know I'm prone to injury so I'm working on changing my form.

The first mile I ran in Nike Frees which make me land on the forefront of my feet instead of heel striking. I always feel so light and quick when I run like that, but you have to start with short distances to build up your feet strength and calf muscles.

I'm glad I was only going a mile and then switching shoes because it was quite chilly here in Florida yesterday. As in 45 degrees with decent wind. After my first mile in my Nikes I came back and put on my Asics, grabbed ear warmers and headed back out for four more.

I'm hoping to build up more endurance in my Nike frees so that I can run longer distances with less chance of injury. We'll see how it goes!

Now onto the deliciousness. During my run I was thinking about what I wanted to eat once I finished. Anyone else do that? Our good friend Garret had just stayed the night and had made a ginormous pot of coffee even though there were only three of us. I was trying to think of how to use up all that extra delicious, Starbucks coffee and decided I should try out a mocha smoothie using my new Hemp Protein Powder from Trader Joe's.

This smoothie is super easy to make and will definitely give you your daily dose of caffeine. You can use any kind of chocolate protein powder that you have on hand too.

New Additions

I won't be sharing any new recipes today (mainly because I'm on vacation with my family!), but I did want to share some things that I'm incorporating into my week more often. These things aren't anything new or mind-blowing, but simply things I recently rediscovered: green smoothies, Teavana tea, endurance fuel, weight lifting and candles.

First of all, let's talk about green smoothies. It still amazes me how I can drink vegetables without tasting them. In most of my green smoothies I just use half a frozen banana and unsweetened almond milk and I stuff in a bunch of spinach and kale and I still can't taste the greens. Since the smoothie tastes sweet to me, why not drink my veggies more often? If you haven't had a green smoothie before, don't let the color or the fact that your drinking veggies scare you. If you make it right, your smoothie will still be sweet. For a good basic green smoothie try out this simple Green Kale Smoothie. From there you can start experimenting more by adding in different types of greens and other yellow fruits, such as mango, pineapple, etc.

Secondly, tea. I love coffee and love the social interactions that coffee provides, but about a year ago I stopped being able to tolerate a lot of caffeine. It makes my heart race and it keeps me from falling asleep at night. Not cool. I still occasionally drink coffee, but since I can't have it everyday I've had to rediscover tea.

I grew up drinking tea...well, milk and sugar and a little tea. I became so used to having milk and sugar in my tea it was hard when I got older to drink it black. I don't think many teas are very good plain, but Teavana tea (while more expensive than simple tea bags) is amazing. It never leaves a weird aftertaste in your mouth like some tea can and there are so many flavors to choose from. It's an awesome way to start you day, especially if you love the though of having a warm drink first thing in the morning.

Endurance fuel is next. While I honestly wish I didn't have to start using these things (it's a pride thing), I really think they will help me perform better on my long distance runs. I remember when I did my first triathlon (an Olympic distance) my friend had given me some electrolyte powder to put into one of my water bottles. During the bike I could really feel my legs beginning to tire, but as I began refueling with the electrolyte water my energy really increased.

In the same way, on longer runs I always start to tapper around mile 9 or so. This makes sense. I'm burning a lot of energy without consuming any energy. Our bodies need fuel to perform, so whether it's these hammer gel packets (which I tried out for the first time on my 10-mile run the other day), some Gatorade, or actually eating a small snack on endurance runs, I think I'll see a lot of improvement in my energy levels and speed.

Weight lifting is maybe the thing I'm most excited about out of these five topics. I tend to gravitate towards cardio workouts, but recently I've started to realized just how important aerobic exercise is as well. Improved bone density, better balance and higher metabolism are just a few of the benefits of weight lifting. I'm hoping that by lifting more weights my muscles will become stronger and that will help me speed up my running pace and have more strength to endure long runs.

The last thing is a bit random, especially for a blog focused on healthy living, but candles have started to become a regular occurrence in my life. Just like food can be warming and comforting, so can a fragrant, flickering candle. Seriously though, candles really relax me and help me to sit and rest longer than I usually would. It's as if when I lite a candle I am committing to sitting and resting for a while instead of running around the house being productive. Rest is needed and candles help make that possible for me.

That's all folks! Merry Christmas!

A Berry Refreshing Smoothie

Cute post name, right? I thought so. This is going to be short and sweet, but I wanted to share with you all a quick, refreshing beverage. First of all, while I call this a smoothie, the base is water so it's not as thick as you may think. It's still full of nutrition and truly is refreshing. Don't let the color scare you away either. I really think we ought to say, "Don't judge a smoothie by it's color," because so often when you blend veggies and fruit together you end up with a nice, murky color. There's nothing much we can do about it, except get over it and drink up. Once the deliciousness of these murky drinks hit our tongues, we usually don't care about the color anyways.

Making this beaut is simple. Place 1 1/2 cup of berries, 1 1/2 cup of greens, 1 cup of water and 1/2 cucumber in a blender and blend until smooth. That's it! Enjoy this drink on a hot day or after a good, sweat producing workout.

A Berry Refreshing Smoothie
(Makes 1 serving)

 Ingredients:

· 1 1/2 cup mixed berries
· 1 1/2 cup greens (kale, spinach, etc.)
· 1/2 cucumber
· 1 cup water

Directions:

1.  Place all of the ingredients in a blender and blend on high until smooth.
2. That’s all!

Banana Bread Batter Smoothie

I'm up to 10 miles in my half-marathon training! Woo Hoo! About ten minutes after Brett and I got home from our night in Daytona yesterday I headed out for my run. It was a gorgeous, cool day and I didn't want to pass up the opportunity to run during an afternoon in Florida without feeling like I was going to die of heat exhaustion. Even though the first five miles felt really slow, I really enjoyed all 10 miles. Brett even showed up on his bike to cheer me on when I was down to two miles left. Loved that.

This is the third time I've trained for a half-marathon. Trained  being the key word. That's because the first two times I injured myself a few weeks out from the race. During my second training attempt I even ran 13 miles the week before the race. It's always my feet that decide they've had enough. I'm just praying that this time they'll hold up!

Now that my mileage is increasing, I've definitely noticed a major increase in my appetite. It seems like the past few days I've been eating a ton. I'm always wondering why I'm so hungry when I just ate a couple hours ago. Rungry. That's why. And it's awesome. There's nothing better than running a lot and eating a lot.

This smoothie recipe that I'm sharing today was my second breakfast this morning. I woke up starving around 3 A.M. (also partly due to day-light savings time) and had breakfast numero uno. I stayed up and read for a couple of hours before falling asleep on the couch until six. After getting ready for the day, my stomach was growling. Que smoothie time.

Seriously, drinking this smoothie made me feel like I was licking the leftover batter out of a bowl I just used to make some kind of delicious baked good. It's sweet and oaty and thick. Ugly? Yes. But delicious.

Banana Bread Batter Smoothie
(Makes 1 servings

 Ingredients:

· 1 frozen banana

· 1 tablespoon chia seeds (optional, but so worth it)

Directions:

1.  Place all of the ingredients, except the chia seeds, in a blender and blend on high until smooth.
2. Add the chia seeds and blend again for another 10 seconds.
3. That’s it. Drink up!

Chocolate Cherry Zucchini Smoothie (a.k.a. Chocolate Shake)

I am currently training for a half marathon in December. It's my THIRD attempt at training for one - I always get injured. This time I'm making sure I cross train and get in a swim or bike session to cut down on the pounding on my joints. So far so good. I've worked up to 7 miles and have actually ran 7 miles for my long run three weekend in a row because I'm ahead of schedule.

Usually I go for my long runs on Saturday or Sunday morning. I just get up and go. I love running in the mornings and being able to see the sun rise. BUT my body doesn't like running in the mornings. It's still asleep. I always feel so slow and sluggish. So this weekend I decided to go for a run in the evening. The weather has started to cool down so it was a great temperature. So many people were outside walking their dogs or having a picnic which made it a good people-watching-while-running-kind-of-night. I felt great too. Not sluggish like my recent morning runs. Unfortunately, even though I felt great, I ended up running slower than I usually do in the mornings. Weird.

Anyways, I've been wanting to try out this chocolate cherry smoothie that has zucchini in it for a while and I finally bought some frozen cherries to do so. I was looking forward to it the entire time I was running. Hey, an motivation helps right?

And praises, I wasn't disappointed with the result! Seriously. Try this smoothie. It tastes like a chocolate milkshake...except there is no dairy and you even get a serving of veggies in your belly!

Chocolate Cherry Zucchini smoothie
(Makes 2 servings)

 Ingredients:

· 1 1/2 cups almond milk (half frozen into ice cubes)
· 1 medium zucchini, cut into chunks NOT sliced
· 1 cup of frozen sweet cherries, pitted
· 2 tablespoons almond butter*
· 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
· Splash of vanilla extract

* I haven’t tried this with any other nut butters yet, but I’m sure it would taste just as good!
* If you want a sweeter smoothie, add in either 2 dates OR 1 tablespoon liquid sweetener of choice.

Directions:

1. Place all of the ingredients in a high quality blender and blend until smooth. You may need to stop and mix the ingredients a couple of times to help the blender along.

Notes: Adapted from here.

Let me know if you try this with a different kind of nut butter or added sweetener!

Green Kale Smoothie (3 Ingredients)

I think one of the best things about going vegan is that I eat a wider variety of produce. You kind of half to start branching out with your fruits and veggies if you cut out all animal products. I bought kale for the first time today and figured I'd start out easy with a smoothie. It turned out great and was so simple! I'm hooked.

Green Kale Smoothie

  Directions:
